‘The Ron Swanson of cats’: Couple devotes months gaining the trust of stray tough guy tomcat named ‘Walter’ to give him an early retirement from being the neighborhood sheriff

Is there anything more satisfying turning the hardened, jaded, king of cats into a cuddly, loving house cat?

Not every rescue story goes purrfectly smooth, and not every stray cat wishes to be living the cushy, indoor life. We all know how cats are with change, especially if they're on the older side. If living on the streets is all they know, and on top of that, if they are the sheriff of their clan of stray cats, they might actually enjoy living outdoors. However, just because they enjoy it, doesn't mean that they also won't enjoy a cuddly, safe retirement as well. You just have to show them how green the catnip is on the other side.

This couple spent months trying to gain the trust of Walter, who they very accurately describe as "the Ron Swanson of cats". Walter is large and in charge, and everyone knows it. He doesn't tolerate any tomfoolery in his neighborhood, and he keeps all the other stray cats in line. However, after a few injuries, the couple decided it was time to take him off the streets and replace his sheriff's badge with a comfy bed.

But, a few days before their vet appointment with Watler, he vanished. Not just for one day. For almost two months. They lost all hope…. until one day, he returned!

"Walter's back! He's back!" the wife screamed.

    "apartment" in the front yard. A cat- sized tent & bed with a rigid canvas canopy over it to keep the elements out. He lived in that for months. We'd see him every day. He got an infected paw from a fight so we brought him inside and had a vet do a house call. She figured he was about 10. The plan was to eventually get him to a vet to be neutered, medicated for anything needed, and brought home to live indoors.

  • Big life transitions aren’t comfortable for anyone, not even cats. It might take a while for Walter to hang up his sheriff badge and get used to his purrfectly free days to do absolutely nothing. But once he does, we are pretty sure he’s going to love it. At 10 years old, he deserves to have a few years of peace, quiet, and cuddles before he leaves us for good. At the very least, he deserves that. He also deserves around one can of tuna per day, but we think his pawrents understand that purrfectly well.

He is a bit stressed about not being let back outside, but he's calmed and is resting. We aren't going to let this chance to finally give him the life he deserves slip away again.

    So, as of now, Walter, the Sheriff 'round these here parts, the Ron Swanson of all cats, is retired to a peaceful life indoors with a loving family.     ObviousToe1636 He needs constant access to a large window facing the street so he can monitor and still carry out his sheriff duties. He needs to maintain a presence. The other strays need to see him and know their paw enforcement hasn't abandoned them. For real though, what a stinkin' cutie! Glad he's inside and getting care.

    MoirTheWarrior OP Last check-in with Walter before bed. He's moved to on top of the spare bed. Some biscuits were made and despite his infection, he's in relatively good spirits. We've got a vet that does house calls coming to check him out and give him some antibiotics on Tuesday. Same vet that saw him about his infected paw a few months back.
